On August 10, the Wuhai pumped storage plant in Inner Mongolia completed the hoisting of all four stay vane assemblies, officially entering the unit installation phase. The plant has a total installed capacity of 1,200 MW (4x300 MW units) with a rated head of 411 meters and total investment of RMB 8.339 billion. Scheduled for commissioning in 2027, it will significantly enhance peak-shaving and frequency-regulation capabilities of the western Inner Mongolia grid, supporting renewable energy absorption and the region's green transition.

Hebei Shangyi Pumped Storage Plant's Unit 2 Enters Trial Operation

On August 12, Unit 2 of the Shangyi pumped storage plant entered a 15-day assessment trial run after completing commissioning, following the first unit's commercial operation on June 29. This marks a key step toward the goal of commissioning all four units within the year. The plant has a total investment of RMB 9.565 billion and 1.4 GW installed capacity with a rated generating head of 449 meters. Upon completion, it will serve peak-shaving, frequency regulation and emergency standby for the Beijing-Tianjin and northern Hebei grids.

GCL Energy Technology Injects RMB 1.7 Billion into Zhejiang Jiande Pumped Storage Project

In August, GCL Energy Technology increased its capital in Zhejiang Jiande GCL Pumped Storage Co. by RMB 1.7 billion, with local shareholder Jiande Xin'an Tourism Investment following with RMB 300 million, lifting registered capital from RMB 500 million to RMB 2.5 billion. The Jiande project has a planned capacity of 1,200 MW, targeting first-unit grid connection by end-2027 and full commissioning in 2028. It will absorb over 2.4 billion kWh of renewable energy annually, providing clean power for approximately 3 million residents. GCL has deployed 12 pumped storage projects nationwide totaling over 15 GW.

Hebei Yanzhao Guyuan 300 MW/600 MWh Storage Demonstration Project Reaches Full Grid Connection

On August 10, the Yanzhao Guyuan storage demonstration project, built by PowerChina Hebei Engineering, achieved full-capacity grid connection. The project uses a 300 MW/600 MWh lithium iron phosphate storage system with 48 storage units and a 220 kV booster station, achieving successful grid connection on the first attempt. Upon operation, it will enhance renewable energy absorption in the northern Hebei region and strengthen grid stability through peak shaving and frequency regulation.

Shanxi Xiangyuan Source-Grid-Load-Storage Integrated Project Phase I Enters Trial Operation

On August 10, Phase I of Xiangyuan County's source-grid-load-storage integrated project (50 MW PV plus 7 MW/28 MWh lithium battery storage) entered full-capacity commissioning and trial operation. Green power is delivered directly to local industrial park enterprises via a 26 km dedicated line, with annual generation reaching 180 GWh. The storage system responds in milliseconds, providing a new model for resource-based counties to achieve local renewable energy consumption.

Shanxi Huozhou 400 MW/700 MWh Independent Storage Station Invites EPC Bids

In August, the 400 MW/700.4 MWh Huozhou hybrid independent storage station EPC project released tenders with a total investment of RMB 2.13 billion. Located at the site of a former chemical fertilizer plant in Huozhou, the project entered full construction phase on August 5. As the largest independent storage station in Linfen, it will participate in Shanxi's market-based electricity trading and smooth fluctuations from wind and solar generation.

Zambia Commissions First Solar-Hydro Hybrid Plant

On August 13, Zambia's first solar-hydro hybrid power station was commissioned, combining a 27 MWp solar PV facility with the existing 56 MW of hydropower operated by Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Company (LHPC) and supplying power to the national grid. The plant is located in Central Province and is implemented by LHPC, 51% owned by Globeleq. Zambia's power system has historically relied heavily on hydropower, with generation constrained during droughts. The hybrid station diversifies generation sources and improves supply reliability.

Construction Begins on 166 MW Solar Plus 80 MWh Storage Project in Philippines

On August 10, Singapore's Levanta Renewables started construction of a 166 MW PV plant with an 80 MWh battery energy storage system in the Philippines. China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) serves as the EPC contractor for the entire project, covering design, procurement and construction. The project, developed by Levanta's subsidiary Magallanes Solar Energy Corporation, is expected to begin commercial operation in Q2 2027.

Uzbekistan Navoi Integrated Energy Project Completes Reverse Power Transmission

On August 15, the Navoi integrated energy project in Uzbekistan, invested by China Energy Engineering's overseas investment subsidiary, completed reverse power transmission and entered the live commissioning phase. The project involves a total investment of USD 394 million, comprising a 300 MW PV plant and 150 MW/300 MWh storage station, generating 750 GWh annually and cutting CO2 emissions by 1.61 million tonnes. It is Uzbekistan's first large-scale integrated renewable energy project.

Karnataka Tenders 2.5 GW Pumped Storage DPR Studies in India

On August 14, Karnataka Power Corporation (KPCL) invited bids for consultancy services to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the 2,500 MW Varahi pumped storage project. India is rapidly advancing pumped hydro development as a key long-duration storage technology to support its ambitious renewable energy targets.
