3GPP Officially Sets 6G Release 21 Standard Freeze Timeline

On June 12, 3GPP formally approved the 6G Release 21 standard timeline at the 112th plenary meetings held in Singapore, ending two years of study-phase debate. Key milestones for this release are: Stage-1 freeze in March 2027, Stage-2 freeze in June 2028, Stage-3 functional freeze in December 2028, and ASN.1/OpenAPI freeze in March 2029. All three 3GPP TSGs (RAN, SA, and CT) approved the schedule simultaneously, along with the 6G scenarios and requirements study item TR 38.914. The meetings had over 590 delegates attending, with 14 6G study items progressing. 3GPP emphasized that the Stage-3 freeze date does not represent commercial product availability.

T-Mobile Unveils Dynamic CX, Using AI to Anticipate Network Congestion

On June 10, T-Mobile announced "Dynamic CX," an AI-powered network management technology that layers predictive intelligence onto its existing network to anticipate congestion and pre-position capacity. The technology integrates real-time traffic data from T-Mobile's nationwide 5G SA network with AI models, enabling automatic resource reallocation during peak hours. T-Mobile stated that Dynamic CX can identify potential bottlenecks and pre-allocate capacity hours before congestion occurs, significantly improving user experience. The technology will also be deeply integrated with T-Mobile's AI customer service and AI operations systems.

Nokia and Indosat Sign Nationwide AI-RAN Rollout Agreement in Indonesia

On June 12, Nokia and Indonesian operator Indosat signed a strategic network modernization and AI-RAN rollout agreement for nationwide deployment of Nvidia-powered AI-RAN in Indonesia. This represents the substantive advancement of the partners' year-long collaboration, marking AI-RAN's transition from planning to actual deployment phase. Nokia's AI-RAN solution integrates AI inference and RAN functions to improve spectrum efficiency and network performance. The project is one of the largest commercial AI-RAN deployments in Southeast Asia and will serve as an important reference case for Nokia's global AI-RAN technology rollout.

Telefonica Promotes New Standard for Application-Aware 5G Slicing

On June 12, Telefonica launched a new industry standard for application-aware 5G network slicing, aimed at enabling operators to dynamically allocate network resources based on different application scenarios. Built on 3GPP Release 18 specifications and combined with network API opening capabilities, the standard allows developers to request differentiated network performance guarantees for video streaming, cloud gaming, industrial control, and other applications. Telefonica stated that the standard will drive 5G SA networks to evolve from general-purpose connectivity services to "on-demand networks," accelerating 5G monetization and vertical industry application adoption.

Samsung and MediaTek Announce Industry-First 5G Uplink Technology

On June 9, Samsung Electronics and MediaTek jointly announced an industry-first 5G uplink technology that significantly improves upload speeds and network coverage for terminal devices. The new technology optimizes transmit antenna switching, carrier aggregation, and power control mechanisms, achieving up to 40% uplink speed improvement in Sub-6 GHz bands and providing more stable connections at cell edges. The technology will be integrated into Samsung's next-generation Exynos baseband chips and MediaTek's Dimensity series 5G chips, with commercial availability in H2 2026. The partnership signals that 5G uplink capability is becoming a competitive focus, which will significantly improve experiences in video live streaming, video conferencing, and cloud gaming.

BT Offers Priority Access 4G/5G Services for Mission-Critical Communications

On June 12, BT Group launched a portfolio of priority access services for mission-critical communications through its EE brand, providing 4G/5G network priority access for emergency response, healthcare, energy, and government departments. The service is based on network slicing technology, ensuring critical users receive stable connection quality and bandwidth during network congestion. BT stated that priority access services have been agreed with multiple UK government departments and utilities, representing an important part of the UK's "critical communications modernization" strategy. The service will also support dedicated network deployments, providing end-to-end connectivity guarantees for customers.

AT&T Frames Satellite as Filling the Rural 1%, Not Eating Telco Margins

On June 9, AT&T CFO Pascal Desroches stated at an investor conference that the company positions direct-to-device (D2D) satellite communications as a "complement" to terrestrial networks, used to fill the approximately 1% rural coverage gap in the United States, rather than replacing core telecom services. Desroches emphasized that satellite communications is an "extension of network coverage" rather than a new revenue source, with AT&T's core strategy remaining fiber and 5G construction. The statement comes amid SpaceX's completion of a $75 billion IPO, intensifying market concerns about the telecom displacement effect of satellite internet companies like Starlink. AT&T plans to selectively deploy D2D satellite services in remote areas.
